Guide to Museums in Johannesburg

Guides | 8th Jun 2017

Despite its tender years (the city was founded a little over 130 years ago) Johannesburg certainly offers a plethora of history – both recent and ancient.

Apartheid Museum
For a thought-provoking experience, the Apartheid Museum is a must-visit. Ranked as one of the best museums in Johannesburg, it gives visitors a hint of what life was like during apartheid.  Expect a dark, gripping journey through the events of 20th century South Africa. There’s a wealth of information on offer, and approximately 3 hours is the recommended minimum amount of time to set aside for your visit.

Opening Hours: Every day of the week from 9am to 5pm.

Hector Pieterson Museum
Another key Johannesburg institution, the Hector Pieterson Museum in Soweto covers the infamous Soweto Uprising of 1976. Gain insight into protests, the lead-up and the aftermath, and reflect on the poignant efforts of young students to effect change. The museum is small, so allow 1 – 2 hours to explore.

Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sundays 10am to 4pm.

Origins Centre
Travel back in time and come face to face with ancient history at the Origins Centre which delves into the fascinating roots of earth and the first humanoids. Visitors typically spend about 2 hours exploring the exhibitions, which explain South Africa’s significance as the cradle of mankind, featuring artefacts, fossils, rock art, films and audio tours.

Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm.

The Museum of African Design
Known by its acronym, MOAD, this is the first museum on the African continent dedicated to design. An ever-evolving space, the museum presents and documents the dynamic world of African design. Tucked away in the achingly-hip neighbourhood of Maboneng, the museum is well worth an hour or two to soak up the varieties of African design.

Opening Hours: Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6pm
