Neighbourhood Watch: Newtown

Features | 26th Jul 2017

We spotlight some of the best attractions, restaurants and shops in our guide to Newtown.

At the heart of Johannesburg’s inner-city regeneration, this historic area is an ever-evolving hub. Dotted with interesting architecture and cultural significance, below are our top picks for what to do in Newtown.

CULTURE
From art to science, Newtown runs the cultural gamut. Opened in 1976, the Market Theatre (markettheatre.co.za) is renowned for its ground breaking plays challenging the apartheid regime. Fast forward to the present day and the theatre is still very much integral to the country’s cultural landscape, presenting cutting edge work with an authentic African voice. For families travelling with children, or those with a scientific interest, a trip to Sci Bono Discovery Centre (sci-bono.com) will please everyone with fascinating, interactive science displays for all ages.

FOOD & DRINK
A two minute walk from neighbourhood focal point Mary Fitzgerald Square, the trendy Potato Shed (thepotatoshed.com) embodies the spirit of a bootlegger brewery, coupled with that of a Southern American barbecue smokehouse. For fine dining, wander 10 minutes down the road to Urbanologi (urbanologi.co.za) in Ferreiras Dorp. Serving ‘urban-garde cuisine’, the restaurant blends street food with an avant-garde thought process, to great acclaim and glowing reviews.

SHOPPING
A retail hub in Newtown Junction, Work Shop New Town (pictured above, workshopnewtown.com) celebrates the best of African fashion, art and design all under one historic roof; a refurbished warehouse dating back to over a century ago. From fashion store pop-ups to art exhibitions and live entertainment, the space is a one stop shop for soaking up the vibrancy and creativity of South Africa today.
