five hundred Secures Top Ten Placement at Eat Out Awards

An exciting day here at the Saxon following last night's Eat Out Awards, where five hundred once again were placed second in the coveted Top Ten restaurant list.

Accepting the award, Executive Chef David Higgs made sure to bestow the credit upon his culinary team at the Saxon, stating “This has been a year of culinary highs for both restaurants at the Saxon Hotel, and I cannot even begin to put words to this immense honour. To be placed in the Top Ten in your first two years of operation as a restaurant, is an extremely difficult task and we would not be here if it were not for my incredibly talented team at the restaurant, headed up by our Head Chef, Candice Philip. This was a joint effort of each and every member, from the chefs who prepare the meals to the service team who present them; every member has a valuable role to play in the creation of our epicurean journey at five hundred and I dedicate these awards to them.”

Observing the culinary achievements, Managing Director George Cohen added, “These awards are a testament to the quality of our food and service at the hotel, as well as the true diversity of South Africa’s gastronomy scene. I am extremely proud of my team as I see the hours of hard work that they put in and the amount of passion they pour into every dish they create. We have been so honored to have received a multitude of food and wine awards for the offering at five hundred this year and I can safely say, we are laying the foundation for a bright culinary future as David Higgs and his team continue to push boundaries by bringing new and creative culinary concepts to the Saxon and the region as a whole.”

The Eat Out Awards

Lauded as the ‘Oscars of the food industry’, the annual extravaganza, hosted at Thunder City, an airport hangar at the Cape Town International Airport, saw industry players, celebrities and members of the public being treated to a five-course meal prepared by six of South Africa's top chefs, including Saxon five hundred’s very own team, each course paired with quality drinks.

Eat Out has been celebrating outstanding South African restaurants since 1998 and the regular awards night is widely regarded as the industry’s “most authoritative and glamorous gastronomic awards event”. This year, thanks to an ever-evolving local cuisine scene, the list of nominees includes some exciting, fresh faces alongside past achievers continuing to push the envelope.

According to Eat Out editor and judge, Abigail Donnelly, the awards help build a healthy and unique, demanding and sustainable food culture in SA. “We reward achievement and celebrate commitment to excellence. In doing so we believe that the awards create a platform for local restaurants to shine, receive recognition and grow,” she added. “Looking back at the food this year, one theme that springs to mind is an approach of daring and playful simplicity. Individual ingredients are allowed to shine. Also, we've seen that chefs are, more and more, celebrating South African cuisine not only through the use of uniquely local ingredients, but as a form of South African storytelling.”

Saxon five hundred is open in the evenings from Tuesdays to Saturdays and booking is essential. To make a reservation, email fivehundred@saxon.co.za or call +27 11 292 6000.
