Visitors can witness the resplendent greenery for themselves in the charming Parks district – the collective name for the ‘Old Joburg’ neighbourhoods of Parktown North, Parkview and Parkhurst. With tree-lined avenues peppered with the purple blooms of Jacaranda trees in springtime, historic architecture and an intimate village atmosphere, we’ve selected our favourite things to do in the ambient Parks area.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
For a leisurely stroll in the Johannesburg sunshine – the city enjoys pleasant weather all year round – head to Zoo Lake. Allow an hour to walk around the lake, or take to the water and opt for a boat ride instead. Time your visit with the first weekend of the month, and you’ll also see the ‘Artists under the Sun’ art market (artistsunderthesun.co.za) alongside the lake. Just across from Zoo Park is Johannesburg Zoo which will entertain wildlife lovers and families alike.

FOOD & DRINK
One of the best spots for a caffeine hit or a casual lunch is The Foundry in Parktown North (foundrycafe.co.za). There’s an artisan essence in the air of this much loved local establishment, evident in the carefully selected drinks list, seasonal ingredients and rustic flavours. For somewhere a little loftier, try La Boqueria (laboqueria.co.za) just down the street. The mid-century modern interiors are modishly cosy, perfect for whiling away a laid-back afternoon in this self-styled ‘all-day eatery’.

SHOPPING & TOURS
For South African arts and crafts, it has to be Art Africa in Parkview. For a taste of European street life, head to Parkhurst’s 4th Avenue, lined with eateries and independent boutiques. Antiquing addicts should pop into Jeremy Stephen Antiques in Parktown North (saada.co.za/jeremy-stephen-antiques), which specialises in upmarket 20th century art and design.
