Like the rest of Johannesburg, the neighbourhood has seen a tremendous transformation over the last decade, with an emerging trendy scene for independent shops and locally-owned cafés, restaurants and delis.

EAT & DRINK
For cheese aficionados, the Cheese Gourmet store and deli in Linden is unmissable. Wooden counters are stacked high with handmade South African cheeses and other locally produced treats. Caffeine addicts should stop by The Whippet Coffee (thewhippetcoffee.com) where the coffee menu runs the gamut from flat whites and superfood lattes to luxury iced coffees.

SHOP
Find exquisite ceramics at Rialheim (rialheim.co.za), handcrafted from African clay by artisans on a historic farm near Cape Town, or snap up an original artwork at the contemporary No End Art Gallery (no-end.co.za). An artist-run space, the gallery supports young artists living and working in South Africa. If timed right, try a more immersive shopping experience with the quarterly Linden Market (thelindenmarket.com). Voted one of the top ten markets in South Africa, this community-centric event is a highly curated affair in Emmarentia Dam, with a special focus on local, handmade and stylish products.

NATURE
Nature lovers can enjoy Linden’s excellent park spaces, with Emmarentia Dam and the Botanical Gardens a beautiful local favourite. For bird watching head to Delta Park, home to the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary. Dotted with dams and bird hides, this refuge is home to many different bird species, and its tranquillity is surprising in the midst of the city.
